Airline Stopover Programs: Turn a Layover Into a Holiday

Airline stopover programs are one of travel's best-kept secrets. Fly through Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Riyadh or Istanbul and the region's great airlines will help you step out for a day or several, often with a free visa, a discounted hotel or a complimentary tour.

Why stop over

The Middle East sits at the crossroads of the world, a single flight from much of Europe, Asia and Africa. That geography made Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Istanbul into the planet's great connecting hubs, and the airlines based there now invite passengers to pause rather than rush through. For Americans heading to India, Southeast Asia, Africa or Australia, a stopover adds a second destination to the same ticket, usually for little or no extra airfare.

A stopover also suits a first taste of the region. Two nights in Doha or Abu Dhabi is enough for a world-class museum, a desert evening and a dinner to remember, and many travelers return for a longer trip. Most programs are booked when you buy your ticket, on the airline's own website.

Making the most of 48 hours

Book the stopover with your ticket or soon after; most programs need a few days' notice. Choose a flight that lands in the morning so the first day is not lost, and check your bag through to your final destination where the airline allows it. For an effortless arrival, consider an airport meet-and-greet service; see arriving privately. And if you love what you see, our guide to the region's finest airlines will help you choose the next journey.
