The Best Time to Visit the Middle East

The best time to visit the Middle East depends on where you are going: the Gulf shines from November to March, while the Mediterranean shores, Türkiye and the mountains are at their best from April to June and September to October. This month-by-month guide helps you plan a luxury Middle East vacation around the weather, the holy month and the great events.

Simple rule

Middle East weather by month: the simple rule

Think of the region in three climates. The Gulf (the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, eastern Saudi Arabia and Muscat) has warm, sunny winters and very hot summers. The Mediterranean rim (Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt's north coast, Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus and Türkiye) has mild winters and long, warm summers that are ideal at the beach. The highlands and deserts, from the Atlas Mountains to AlUla and Wadi Rum, have bright days and cool, sometimes cold, nights in winter.

For most American travelers, that means Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and the Red Sea of Saudi Arabia from late October to April, and Istanbul, Cyprus and Morocco in spring and fall. Summer is not off limits: it is the season for great hotel value in the Gulf, beach life on the Mediterranean, and the green monsoon in Salalah.

Ramadan travel tips

Ramadan travel tips and the Eid holidays

Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, moves about 11 days earlier each year because it follows the lunar calendar. Visiting during Ramadan can be memorable: evenings come alive with iftar meals and late-night gatherings, and hotels offer beautiful Ramadan tents. During the day, eat and drink discreetly in public, dress modestly, and expect shorter business hours. Hotels and resorts continue to serve guests.

The two Eid holidays are festive, busy times of family travel across the region, so book hotels and flights early. All dates below are approximate astronomical estimates; official dates are set by moon sighting and can shift by a day. For the full list, see Holidays and National Days and our guide to customs and etiquette.

Summer escape

The summer escape

When the Gulf is at its hottest, the region still offers cool, green corners. Salalah in southern Oman turns lush during the khareef monsoon from July to September. Taif and the Asir mountains around Abha in Saudi Arabia sit high enough for mild summer days, as does Jebel Akhdar in Oman. The Atlas Mountains, Cappadocia and the Mediterranean coasts of Türkiye and Cyprus round out the list. See The Summer Escape for our favorites.
