Bahrain is an archipelago of more than 30 islands, linked to Saudi Arabia by the King Fahd Causeway. It was the heart of the ancient Dilmun civilization, a trading hub between Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley, and for centuries the source of the world's finest natural pearls.
Today it is one of the most relaxed and welcoming countries in the Gulf, with a lively restaurant scene, beach resorts and a compact size that makes it easy to explore in a long weekend. Its growth plan is set out in Bahrain Economic Vision 2030.

Manama is the capital: the Bab Al Bahrain gate and souq, the Bahrain National Museum, Al Fateh Grand Mosque and the towers of Bahrain Bay. Across the water, Muharraq holds the UNESCO-listed Pearling Path, a trail of restored merchant houses, and Bahrain's best traditional cafes.
The north coast is home to Qal'at al-Bahrain, the UNESCO-listed Bahrain Fort and ancient harbor of Dilmun. Inland, the Dilmun Burial Mounds form another World Heritage Site. To the south, the Bahrain International Circuit at Sakhir hosts the Formula 1 Grand Prix, and the island of Hawar is a quiet nature retreat.

Flights: Gulf Air, the national carrier, flies nonstop from New York JFK three times a week; from other US cities, connect through a Gulf hub or London. Visa: US passport holders can apply for an eVisa through the official Bahrain eVisa portal or obtain a visa on arrival, usually for a two-week stay that can be extended. Your passport should be valid for six months.
Dress: Bahrain is relaxed by regional standards, but modest dress in souqs and mosques is appreciated. Alcohol is served in hotels and licensed restaurants. During Ramadan (expected to begin around February 8, 2027), daytime eating in public should be discreet.
Money: the dinar is worth about $2.65. Dinner for two at a top Manama restaurant from about $160 (BHD 60); a Grand Prix weekend grandstand ticket from about $300 (BHD 113). Taxis and ride-hailing are inexpensive, and nowhere on the main island is more than about 40 minutes away.
Bahrain Grand Prix and more
The Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix is held under floodlights at Sakhir, typically in the early spring; check the official Bahrain International Circuit site for the current date and tickets. Away from race weekend, the circuit offers driving experiences on track.
Walk the Pearling Path in Muharraq, visit Bahrain Fort at sunset, dive for pearls with a licensed guide, and explore the galleries of Block 338 in Adliya, the city's dining district. The Tree of Life, a lone mesquite in the desert, is a short drive from the resorts.
Long weekend
Day one: start at the Bahrain National Museum for the story of Dilmun and the pearling era, then cross to the Al Fateh Grand Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, which welcomes visitors with guided tours. Spend the evening in the Bab Al Bahrain souq and dine in Adliya.
Day two: drive to Muharraq and follow the Pearling Path, stopping at the restored Siyadi House and the Bin Matar House, then have lunch in a traditional cafe. In the afternoon visit Bahrain Fort and its site museum, and watch the sunset from the ramparts.
Day three: relax at your beach resort, take a boat to the sandbars off the coast, or try a driving experience at the Bahrain International Circuit.
The best weather runs from November to March. Bahrain's events calendar includes the Spring of Culture festival of music and arts, the Bahrain International Airshow (next edition in 2028), and National Day celebrations on December 16. The Formula 1 Grand Prix brings concerts and parties to Sakhir, and hotels fill fast, so book early.
Summer is hot and humid, but hotel rates are lower and the island's malls, spas and indoor attractions keep visitors busy.
Dining
Bahraini cuisine centers on machboos, spiced rice with fish or meat, and on fresh catch from the Gulf such as hamour and safi. Try halwa Bahraini, a sticky sweet flavored with saffron and rosewater, at the old shops in Muharraq. Manama's hotel restaurants and the Adliya and Seef districts host a strong international dining scene.
Bahrain International Airport sits on Muharraq, about 15 minutes from central Manama, and its modern terminal opened in 2021. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are inexpensive and reliable, and most luxury hotels arrange airport transfers. Many visitors combine Bahrain with neighboring Saudi Arabia: the King Fahd Causeway leads to Al Khobar and the Eastern Province in under an hour. For private flights, see private jet charter in the region.
Property and the Bahrain
Bahrain allows foreign freehold ownership in designated areas and offers a Golden Residency Visa, including a route through property ownership. See our guide to Bahrain property investment and golden residency, and compare programs across the region in golden visa and residency by investment.
