Why go

Why go to Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven emirates and the capital of the country, a city of islands, mangroves and wide boulevards on the Gulf. Where Dubai dazzles, Abu Dhabi impresses with depth: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and a growing Saadiyat Cultural District, alongside some of the region's grandest hotels.

The emirate stretches far beyond the city, to the oasis garden city of Al Ain, the dunes of the Empty Quarter at Liwa and the wildlife island of Sir Bani Yas. Two islands deserve their own guides: Saadiyat Island for beaches and culture, and Yas Island for theme parks and Formula 1. For the wider country, see our UAE guide.

Best time to visit Abu Dhabi

November to March brings warm, sunny days and pleasant evenings, ideal for beaches, desert trips and outdoor dining. Late November or early December usually brings the Formula 1 season finale at Yas Marina Circuit, when hotels book out well ahead. Summer, from June to September, is very hot, but indoor attractions, spas and summer rates make it a value season.

During Ramadan the city is quieter by day and festive after dark; hotels and attractions stay open. The UAE weekend is Saturday and Sunday, with many offices closing early on Friday.

Arriving in Abu Dhabi

Arriving in Abu Dhabi, including privately

Etihad Airways, the national airline, flies nonstop from six US cities to Zayed International Airport, whose terminal opened in late 2023. US-bound travelers can complete US border preclearance in Abu Dhabi before flying home, arriving in America as a domestic passenger. Read more in our airlines guide.

Private jets use Zayed International's executive terminal or Al Bateen Executive Airport close to the city center; see FBOs and private terminals and arriving privately. From Dubai International, a chauffeured car takes about 90 minutes; chauffeur services and helicopter transfers can be arranged.
