Why visit Jordan

Jordan is the Middle East's great adventure in a manageable package. Most of its highlights lie along a single highway running from Amman south to the Red Sea, so you can see Roman cities, desert castles, Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea in about a week. The Hashemite Kingdom is known for its welcome, and tourism is a source of national pride.

Jordan has eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Petra, Wadi Rum, the desert castle of Quseir Amra, Um er-Rasas and the Baptism Site at Bethany Beyond the Jordan. Discover the background in our guide to Jordan's history and culture.

Where to go

Where to go in Jordan

Amman, the capital, spreads across hills crowned by the Citadel and a Roman theater, with a lively café culture and fine restaurants in Abdoun and Jabal Amman. See our Amman luxury hotels guide. Just north is Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman cities anywhere.

Petra is the reason many travelers come. Walk through the narrow Siq to the Treasury, climb to the Monastery, and return for Petra by Night, when the path is lit by candles. Our Petra tour and hotels guide explains how to plan two full days.

Wadi Rum is a vast desert of sandstone mountains and red sand, the backdrop to Lawrence of Arabia and many films set on Mars. Stay in a bubble tent or private camp; see Wadi Rum luxury camps.

The Dead Sea lies more than 430 meters below sea level, where the salt water keeps you afloat and resorts offer mineral spas; read our guide to Dead Sea luxury resorts. Aqaba, on the Red Sea, has coral reefs, beaches and resorts at Tala Bay and Ayla; see Aqaba Red Sea resorts. Nature lovers should add the Dana Biosphere Reserve and the canyons of Wadi Mujib.

Practical tips for US travelers

Visa and the Jordan Pass. US citizens can get a visa on arrival at Amman's Queen Alia International Airport (single entry about 40 JOD, approximately US$56) or apply for an e-visa. The best value is the Jordan Pass, bought online before you travel: it includes entry to Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash and many other sites, and waives the visa fee for visitors who stay at least three days (two nights). Prices start at about 70 JOD (approximately US$100).

Getting there. Royal Jordanian flies nonstop to Amman from New York, Chicago, Detroit, Washington and, since May 2026, Dallas Fort Worth. Amman to Petra is about three hours by car; Petra to Wadi Rum about 90 minutes. For premium options, see our airlines page.

Dress. Amman is cosmopolitan, but modest dress, covering shoulders and knees, is best outside resorts. Swimwear is fine at hotels and Red Sea and Dead Sea beaches.

Alcohol. Available in hotels, licensed restaurants and bars. Jordan makes its own wine and beer.

Ramadan. Hotels and tourist sites remain open and serve visitors, though many local restaurants close by day. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around February 8, depending on the moon.

Money. Cards are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants. A private guide for Petra costs from roughly 50 JOD (approximately US$70).

Food and experiences

Jordan's national dish is mansaf, lamb cooked in fermented yogurt and served over rice. Levantine mezze, knafeh from Amman's old bakeries and zarb, a Bedouin barbecue cooked under the sand in Wadi Rum, are all memorable.

The best experiences include hiking Petra's back trails to the Monastery, sunset jeep tours and hot-air ballooning over Wadi Rum, floating and a mud treatment at the Dead Sea, diving Aqaba's reefs, and canyoning in Wadi Mujib. Our list of desert camps and lodges compares the best places to sleep under the stars.

Jordan also rewards travelers who love craft and shopping. In Amman, Rainbow Street and Jabal Weibdeh are full of design shops, galleries and cafes, while the women's cooperatives across the country sell hand-woven rugs, embroidered textiles, Dead Sea skincare and mosaics from Madaba. Many purchases directly support local communities. For wellness, the Dead Sea resorts are among the most renowned spa destinations in the world, with mineral pools, mud wraps and treatments using salts from the sea itself. Hot springs at Ma'in, set in a canyon above the Dead Sea, add another memorable soak.

Sample week

A sample week in Jordan

Most first-time visitors follow a classic loop. Spend two nights in Amman, with a morning at the Citadel and Roman theater and an afternoon trip to Jerash. Drive south along the King's Highway, stopping at Madaba for its Byzantine mosaic map and at Mount Nebo, then continue to Petra for two nights. Head next to Wadi Rum for a night in a luxury camp, and finish with two nights at the Dead Sea before flying home from Amman, just an hour away.

With more time, add Aqaba for diving and snorkeling on the Red Sea, the Dana Biosphere Reserve for hiking, or the desert castles east of Amman. Jordan combines easily with Israel or Egypt for a longer journey through the lands of the Bible and the pharaohs. Families will find tips in our family travel guide.

Property and investment

Living in Jordan: property and investment

Jordan offers residency and citizenship options for qualifying investors, and Amman's upscale neighborhoods and the Dead Sea and Aqaba coasts are the most sought-after property markets. The Aqaba Special Economic Zone continues to attract tourism and logistics projects. Read about the country's plans in Jordan Vision 2033 and compare options in residency and golden visas.
