Fujairah: The UAE Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

Fujairah, the UAE's only emirate set wholly on the Gulf of Oman, is our Spotlight of the Month. Here is why to visit Fujairah now, from its great mosques and mountain watchtowers to its reefs and resorts, and why the world's shipping and energy companies already do business there.

Why Fujairah

Why Fujairah, and why now

Most Americans who visit the United Arab Emirates see Dubai and Abu Dhabi and never cross the mountains. They miss the country's most dramatic landscape. Fujairah faces east across the Gulf of Oman toward the Indian Ocean, and the Hajar Mountains rise straight behind its beaches, so this is the UAE of peaks, green wadis, date farms, coral reefs and long, quiet bays.

It is also a place of deep history and serious business. Fujairah has the UAE's oldest known mosque at Al Bidya, a restored hilltop fort, and the second-largest mosque in the country. And on its shore sits the Port of Fujairah, among the three largest ship-refueling hubs on earth. That combination is why Fujairah is our first Spotlight of the Month: a destination worth the trip, and an economy worth knowing.

Built of white granite and marble and modeled on its namesake in Abu Dhabi, the mosque is designed for about 28,000 worshippers and is at its most beautiful after dark, its six minarets glowing against the mountains. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times; check visiting hours before you go and dress modestly. See great mosques of the region.

Heritage

The watchtowers of the Hajar Mountains

Fujairah's mountain valleys

Stone watchtowers still stand guard over the passes and date gardens of the Hajar Mountains, part of the network of forts, including Fujairah Fort, that protected this coast for centuries. They are best seen in the golden light of early morning or late afternoon, on the road into the mountains. See the history and culture of the UAE.

Fujairah City and the Hajar Mountains

Fujairah is the UAE's only emirate set wholly on the Gulf of Oman. The jagged Hajar range rises straight behind the city and its parks, so a single day can take in a mountain drive, a wadi walk and a swim. From October to April the air is clear and the evenings are cool. See diving and the outdoors.

The coast

Beaches, reefs and five-star resorts

The emirate's resorts line the Al Aqah coast in the north, facing Snoopy Island, a rocky islet just offshore where turtles and reef fish make some of the best snorkeling in the UAE. Further north, Dibba Rock is a favorite with divers, and Dibba's harbor is the gateway to the fjords of Oman's Musandam peninsula.

Fujairah is the UAE at a gentler pace: five-star beach resorts with mountain views, calm seas from October to April, and dinners on the sand rather than in the city. See our guide to the best resorts in Fujairah for every five-star address, and the best beaches of the Middle East.

Business

Doing business in Fujairah

The Port of Fujairah is the only multi-purpose seaport on the UAE's east coast, on the open Gulf of Oman with direct access to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. It ranks among the world's three largest bunkering hubs, alongside Singapore and Rotterdam, and the terminals behind it hold nearly 18 million cubic meters of oil storage, the largest commercial capacity of its kind in the Middle East. AD Ports Group's Fujairah Terminals handles containers, general cargo and cruise calls, and the port is connected to the Etihad Rail national network.

For companies, the Fujairah Free Zone beside the port offers a tax-free base for trading, logistics and industry, and Creative City, Fujairah's media free zone since 2007, licenses media, production and digital businesses. The Fujairah 2040 Plan prepares for a population of more than 500,000, with about 8,800 new homes and 1,500 new hotel rooms in its first phase. Investors can qualify for the UAE's ten-year golden visa; see also free zones and company setup and doing business in the Middle East.

How do I get to Fujairah from the United States?

Fly nonstop to Dubai or Abu Dhabi, then drive about 90 minutes through the Hajar Mountains. Etihad Rail passenger trains have linked Abu Dhabi and Fujairah since June 30, 2026, in about 1 hour 45 minutes, and the network now also serves Dubai, with Sharjah to follow. See nonstop flights from the US.

Do Americans need a visa?

No visa is needed in advance: US passport holders receive a free visa on arrival in the UAE, usually for 30 days. See the UAE visa guide.

Yes. The Fujairah Free Zone, beside the port, and Creative City, the emirate's media free zone, both license foreign-owned companies. See free zones and company setup and take local professional advice.
