Why go

Why go to Marrakech

Few cities reward a luxury traveler as quickly as Marrakech. Within an hour of landing you can be in a garden of olive and orange trees, drinking mint tea beside a pool, with the call to prayer drifting over the medina and the High Atlas white on the horizon in winter. The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its souks, palaces and madrasas are still very much in daily use.

The city also does modern Morocco beautifully: designer boutiques in Gueliz, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum beside the Majorelle Garden, contemporary art at MACAAL, golf on more than a dozen courses and spa culture built on the ancient hammam. It is the natural first stop on any Morocco luxury vacation, and the gateway to the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara and the coast at Essaouira.

Best time to visit Marrakech

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October and November) bring warm days and cool evenings. December to February is sunny but chilly after dark, perfect for fireside dinners and snow views over the mountains. July and August regularly pass 100°F, when the best plan is a pool by day and the medina after sunset.

During Ramadan, which in 2027 is expected to fall from around early February to early March (exact dates follow the moon), restaurants in hotels stay open for visitors and the evenings are festive; be discreet about eating and drinking in public by day. The weekend is Saturday and Sunday. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels, restaurants and bars.

Things to do

Things to do in Marrakech

Hire a private guide for the medina: the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Madrasa and the Jemaa el-Fna square at dusk. Visit the Majorelle Garden early, then the Yves Saint Laurent Museum next door. Book a hammam ritual, a cooking class in a riad, a hot-air balloon flight over the palm groves at sunrise, or an afternoon at one of the city's championship golf courses.

For shopping, the souks are best with a guide who knows the master artisans; for curated design, try the concept stores of Gueliz. Evening plans can include dinner under the stars in the Agafay stone desert, 40 minutes away, or one of the hotel bars where Marrakech society gathers. For a wider look at the region's best treatments, see our guide to health spas.

Nearby

Day trips run to the Ourika Valley and Imlil in the High Atlas, to the Agafay desert, and to the Atlantic at Essaouira, about 2.5 hours west. Overnight journeys continue over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ouarzazate and on to the dunes of Merzouga. Casablanca is under three hours by train or road.

Villas, riads and luxury

Living in Marrakech: villas, riads and luxury property

Marrakech has one of North Africa's most international property markets: restored riads in the medina, gated villas in the Palmeraie and on the Route de l'Ourika, and branded residences linked to golf resorts. Foreign buyers can generally purchase freehold property in Morocco. Read our guide to Morocco Luxury Real Estate and Marrakech villas and register your interest and we will point you to vetted agents.

Questions travelers ask

Questions travelers ask about Marrakech

Do Americans need a visa for Marrakech?

No. US passport holders can visit Morocco for up to 90 days without a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from entry.

Is there a nonstop flight from the US to Marrakech?

Yes, seasonally. United flies from Newark and Delta from Atlanta during the winter season. Royal Air Maroc also flies nonstop from New York JFK, Washington, Miami and Los Angeles to Casablanca, with easy connections.

Riad or palace hotel?

A riad gives intimacy and the feel of a private home in the medina; a palace hotel gives gardens, large pools and full service. Many travelers split their stay between the two.

What should I wear?

Light, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is comfortable and respectful in the medina. Swimwear is fine at hotel pools.
