Why go

Why go to Doha

Few cities have reinvented themselves as thoughtfully as Doha. The Corniche curves around a bay framed by the West Bay skyline on one side and the Museum of Islamic Art on the other; behind it lies Souq Waqif, rebuilt in traditional style and buzzing every evening. Add superb hotels, a deep cultural calendar and one of the world's best-connected airports, and Doha works equally well as a destination or a luxurious stopover.

For visas, customs and the bigger picture, start with our Qatar luxury vacation guide. Just north of the center, the new city of Lusail adds marinas, a boulevard and more five-star hotels.

Best time to visit

Best time to visit and getting there

November to March is ideal, with warm days, cool evenings and the busiest season for events, from sporting finals to art and design weeks. Summer is very hot and humid, though hotel rates fall and indoor attractions stay open. During Ramadan, daytime eating in public is avoided and the city celebrates after dark with iftar tents and late-night souq strolls.

Qatar Airways flies nonstop from several US cities to Hamad International Airport. For winter 2026-27 the airline's published US network covers twelve cities: New York JFK, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle; flight times run roughly 13 hours from the East Coast and about 16 from Los Angeles. Check the best airlines for first and business class for cabin details. US citizens receive a visa waiver on arrival for stays of up to 90 days; confirm current rules before travel. Hamad also has a dedicated private terminal, covered in our guide to private jet charter.

Dress modestly in public places, with shoulders and knees covered; hotels and beach clubs are more relaxed. Alcohol is served only in licensed hotel restaurants and bars.

Living in Doha: luxury property and residency

Foreigners can buy freehold property in designated areas such as The Pearl-Qatar, West Bay Lagoon and parts of Lusail, with sea-view apartments from approximately $500,000 and villas well above $1.5 million. Buying property above set thresholds can bring residency: at last check, investment of approximately $200,000 (QAR 730,000) supports a renewable residence permit, and approximately $1 million (QAR 3.65 million) supports permanent-style residency with added benefits. Our guide to Qatar Luxury Real Estate investment and The Pearl explains the details, and Qatar National Vision 2030 sets out where the country is heading.
