Why go

Why go to the Red Sea

On the coast between Umluj and Al Wajh, Red Sea Global is developing a vast protected area of lagoons, islands, volcanic fields and canyons, with strict limits on visitor numbers and resorts powered by renewable energy. The reefs here are among the healthiest in the region, the water is clear and warm much of the year, and the sense of space is extraordinary. Read about the plan on our Red Sea Global project page.

The destination opened in stages from late 2023. It now offers a rare choice: private-island villas reached by seaplane, desert retreats among the dunes and mountains, and a livelier island hub at Shura with golf, a marina and several hotels side by side. Farther north, the sister destination of Amaala focuses on wellness.

Things to do

Snorkeling and diving are the highlight: house reefs, turtle and dolphin encounters, and dive trips to sites few people have ever seen. See diving and the outdoors. Shura Links, an 18-hole championship course, is billed as Saudi Arabia's first island golf course. On land, explore the canyons and dormant volcanoes by e-bike or 4x4, hike to viewpoints at Desert Rock, or try the adventure activities at Adrena, about 20 minutes from Shura.

Sailing and yacht days are easy to arrange from the marinas; see superyacht charter and yacht itineraries. The night skies are exceptionally dark, and several resorts run stargazing sessions.

From the airport, resorts arrange electric cars to the coast and Shura Island, and seaplanes or boats to the island resorts, a 25 to 45 minute hop.

Good to know

Island villas from about US$1,800 a night (approximately) are typical at the most exclusive resorts; Shura Island rooms start lower. Resort dress is relaxed, with swimwear fine at pools and beaches; dress modestly in public areas off the resort. Alcohol is not served. US passport holders can use the Saudi tourist eVisa. Summer is very hot; October to May is the best time to visit.

Owning a home at the Red Sea

Branded residences at Shura Island and some resorts have been handed over since 2025, offering a rare chance to own a second home in a protected marine setting. See Saudi Arabia Luxury Real Estate and branded residences, and take advice before buying.
