Christian Holy Sites in the Middle East

The Christian holy sites of the Middle East trace the Gospel story on the ground, from Bethlehem and Nazareth to the shores of Galilee and the hill of Calvary in Jerusalem. Beyond the Holy Land, a Christian pilgrimage tour can take in Moses' mountain in Sinai, the rock churches of Cappadocia and the ancient churches of Coptic Cairo.

Planning a Holy Land tour

Most of the Gospel sites lie within a few hours of one another, so a well-paced week with a private guide can cover Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth and Galilee, with a crossing to the Baptism Site and Mount Nebo in Jordan. Many churches belong to different Christian communities, each with its own hours and customs; a good guide knows them all.

Dress modestly everywhere: covered shoulders and knees, no hats for men inside churches, and a scarf handy for women at Orthodox and Armenian sites. Churches usually open from early morning to dusk, often closing at midday, and pause for Mass and the liturgy. Photography during services is not appropriate. In Muslim-majority countries, sites keep their own hours but the local weekend and Ramadan can change them.

Great Christian holy sites

The great Christian holy sites

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Old City, Jerusalem

Revered as the place of the crucifixion, burial and resurrection, shared by several Christian communities. Usually open from early morning to evening, with shorter winter hours; expect lines at the Edicule. More on our Jerusalem holy city page.

Church of the Nativity

Bethlehem, Palestinian Territories

Built over the grotto honored as the birthplace of Jesus, one of the oldest continuously used churches in the world. Open daily; services in the grotto pause visits. See Bethlehem and Hebron.

Basilica of the Annunciation

Nazareth

A modern basilica over the grotto where tradition places the Annunciation, with Madonna mosaics gifted from around the world. Open daily, closed briefly at midday.

Sea of Galilee

Northern Israel

Capernaum, Tabgha with its loaves-and-fishes mosaic, and the Mount of Beatitudes ring the lake. A boat crossing at sunrise is unforgettable; stay in Tiberias or a lakeside guesthouse.

Baptism Site, Bethany Beyond the Jordan

Jordan

A UNESCO World Heritage site where archaeology and tradition point to the baptism of Jesus. Visits are by shuttle and guide from the visitor center, mornings to late afternoon.

Mount Nebo

Madaba, Jordan

The summit from which Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land, with Byzantine mosaics in the Memorial Church and views over the Dead Sea. Nearby Madaba has the celebrated mosaic map of the Holy Land. Stay at our Dead Sea resorts.

Saint Catherine's Monastery

South Sinai, Egypt

A Greek Orthodox monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai, active since the sixth century, with a priceless library and icon collection. Mornings only and closed on Fridays, Sundays and Orthodox holidays; many visitors climb Mount Sinai for sunrise first.

Coptic Cairo

Old Cairo, Egypt

The Hanging Church, the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, where tradition says the Holy Family sheltered, and the Coptic Museum, all within a few lanes. See our Cairo guide.

Göreme Open-Air Museum

Cappadocia, Türkiye

Rock-cut churches painted with Byzantine frescoes, part of a UNESCO site. Combine with a balloon flight and a Cappadocia cave hotel.

House of the Virgin Mary and Ephesus

Selçuk, Türkiye

A small chapel honored as Mary's last home, near the Roman city where Saint Paul preached and the Basilica of Saint John stands.

Qadisha Valley

Northern Lebanon

A deep valley of cave chapels and monasteries, with the ancient Cedars of God above; a UNESCO site of great beauty.

Paphos (Baf) and the Troodos churches

Cyprus

Cyprus is where Paul and Barnabas began their mission; visit Paphos (Baf) with Saint Paul's Pillar, the painted churches of the Troodos and Kykkos Monastery.

Abrahamic Family House

Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi

Saint Francis Church stands beside a mosque and synagogue in one compound, open to visitors with free booking.

Traveling well

Christmas Eve in Bethlehem and Holy Week in Jerusalem are profound, but crowds are heavy and hotels fill a year ahead. For quieter visits, choose late autumn or early spring. A private car and guide give you flexibility to cross between countries and to arrive at popular churches as they open. Read our Jordan travel guide and our Israel guide for hotels and practicalities.

Some sites are in areas where conditions change; check current guidance before you go.
