Where the horse came home

The Arabian horse, with its dished face and high-carried tail, was bred in these deserts for thousands of years, and nearly every Thoroughbred racing today traces its bloodline to three stallions brought from the region to England around 1700. The Gulf's ruling families have been central to modern racing for decades, from the Godolphin operation founded in Dubai to studs in Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Learn more about this heritage in Bedouin heritage.

The result is a winter racing season of global stature. American horses and trainers are regulars and frequent winners: in March 2026, the American colt Magnitude, trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Jose Ortiz, won the 30th Dubai World Cup at Meydan. Race days are social events as much as sporting ones, with fashion contests, fine dining and evening racing under floodlights.

How to attend

General admission at Meydan and King Abdulaziz Racecourse is affordable or even free on many regular race days, while World Cup and Saudi Cup nights sell tickets in tiers from roughly US$50 for general admission to well over US$1,000 for private suites and fine-dining packages. Book through the official racing club websites. Dress codes are elegant, with men in suits and women in smart dresses or modest evening wear; hats are welcome, and many guests wear national dress.

Stay at Dubai's luxury hotels or in Riyadh, where the track sits in the northern part of the city near Riyadh's best hotels. Doha and Dubai have nonstop flights from many US cities; see nonstop flights from the US. Nearby, the stud farms and private stables are part of a wider equestrian lifestyle, and villa communities with riding facilities, such as those around Dubai's Arabian Ranches, are popular with buyers; see Dubai Luxury Real Estate.
