Ajman Travel: Beaches, Mangroves and the Calm Side of the Emirates

Ajman travel is about a slower, gentler Emirates: a white-sand Corniche, a fort-turned-museum and a protected mangrove forest, all within easy reach of Dubai. Its five-star beach hotels and the Al Zorah waterfront make it one of the most relaxed places to stay on the Gulf.

Why go to Ajman

Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates, a short drive north of Dubai along the Gulf coast. What it lacks in size it makes up for in ease: long, uncrowded beaches, a walkable Corniche, a handsome old fort and one of the finest protected mangrove areas in the country. Many travelers base themselves here for a quieter beach week and dip into Dubai's luxury hotels, malls and restaurants when they want the bright lights.

The emirate's showpiece is Al Zorah, a waterfront district built around a natural mangrove reserve, a Nicklaus Design golf course and a marina. Next door, Sharjah's museums and heritage quarter are fifteen minutes away, and the Umm Al Quwain mangroves and islands lie just up the coast.

Things to do in Ajman

Ajman Museum

Ajman city, UAE

Set inside an 18th-century fort that served as the ruler's residence until 1970, the museum tells the story of pearling, dhow building and daily life, with archaeological finds reaching back around five thousand years. Labels are in English and Arabic.

Ajman Corniche and Beach

Ajman city, UAE

A palm-lined promenade runs beside a broad public beach with calm, shallow water. Come at sunset, when families gather and the cafés along the waterfront fill up.

Al Zorah Nature Reserve

Al Zorah, Ajman

About one million square meters of natural mangrove forest, lagoons and tidal creeks, home to dozens of bird species including flamingos, egrets and herons. Kayaking through the channels is the classic way to see it, and the calm water suits beginners.

Al Zorah Golf Club

Al Zorah, Ajman

Ajman's first championship course and a Nicklaus Design course, laid out among mangroves and lagoons. Its natural setting makes it one of the most distinctive rounds in the country; see more on our golf in the Middle East page.

Dhow Yard and Old Harbor

Ajman Creek, UAE

Ajman has a long boat-building tradition, and wooden dhows are still worked on by hand along the creek. It is a living link to the Gulf's pearling history.

Day trips

Sharjah, Dubai and Umm Al Quwain

Ajman's central position makes it easy to see three emirates in a day: museums in Sharjah, the skyline of Dubai and the quiet lagoons of Umm Al Quwain.
