Why the world now

Why the world now meets in the Gulf

In two decades, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Doha have built some of the finest exhibition centers anywhere, backed by world-class airlines, hotels and airports. Their calendars now carry flagship events in technology, artificial intelligence, energy, aviation, real estate and government, attracting delegates and investors from every continent.

For American visitors, the timing is helpful: the main season runs from autumn to spring, when the weather is at its best, and Dubai and Doha are a single overnight flight from the East Coast. Plan around the region's best months and the Islamic holidays, when offices slow down.

What to know

Business travel in Dubai and the Gulf: what to know

The working week differs by country. The UAE works Monday to Friday, with many offices closing early on Friday, while Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman work Sunday to Thursday. Meetings often start a little late and run long; patience and warmth go a long way. Relationships come first, so expect coffee, conversation and perhaps several meetings before any decision.

Greet with the right hand, and let a Gulf host decide whether to shake hands with a woman; a hand on the heart is a gracious alternative. Business cards are still exchanged, and a card printed in English and Arabic is a nice touch. During Ramadan, working hours shorten and evening iftar invitations become the best moments for relationship-building; our guide to customs and etiquette covers the details.

US passport holders receive a visa on arrival in the UAE and Qatar, while Saudi Arabia offers an eVisa; confirm that the visa you choose fits your purpose, especially if you will be exhibiting or working on a stand.

Getting around and arriving well

In Dubai, the Metro serves both the Dubai World Trade Centre and Expo City Dubai, but a private car is the comfortable choice in show week, when roads are busy. Riyadh's major venues are spread out, so plan generous travel time. Our guide to chauffeurs and self-drive lists reliable firms, and the region's airlines in first and business class make the long flight productive. For a seamless start, consider a VIP arrival service.

Cityscape and the investor's

Cityscape and the investor's calendar

Many delegates combine a conference with a look at property. Cityscape Global in Riyadh is the natural moment to see Saudi Arabia's new communities, while Dubai's developers launch projects throughout the season. Questions business travelers ask

When and where is GITEX 2026?

GITEX Global 2026 is scheduled for 7 to 11 December 2026 at the Dubai Exhibition Centre in Expo City Dubai. Check gitex.com for the latest details.

How early should I book a hotel for a major show?

For GITEX, the Dubai Airshow or the World Governments Summit, three to six months ahead is wise. Rates can rise sharply in show week, so book flexible rates early.

What should I wear to meetings in the Gulf?

A suit or smart business wear for men; for women, business attire with shoulders and knees covered. Offices and venues are strongly air-conditioned, so a light jacket is useful.

Which days are the weekend?

Saturday and Sunday in the UAE; Friday and Saturday in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. Avoid scheduling meetings on Friday midday anywhere in the Gulf.
