Jordan
At about 1,400 feet below sea level, the Dead Sea is the lowest point on land on earth, a mineral-rich lake so salty you float without effort. Jordan's eastern shore is lined with some of the finest spa resorts in the Middle East, under an hour from Amman.

Why go
People have come here for healing since antiquity. The water carries roughly ten times the salt of the ocean, along with magnesium, potassium and bromine, and the thick, oxygen-rich air at this depth filters some of the sun's rays. The ritual is simple and unforgettable: float in the warm, silky water, cover yourself in black mineral mud, rinse, and watch the sun set behind the hills across the water.
The Jordanian shore offers a cluster of large resorts with lagoon pools, private beaches and expansive spas, which makes it a perfect recovery stop between Amman and the south. Our Jordan travel guide puts it in context.

October to May is ideal, with warm days and comfortable evenings; spring and autumn are perfect. Summer temperatures often exceed 100°F, although the resorts and their pools remain busy with weekend visitors from Amman. Weekends (Friday and Saturday) are livelier than midweek.
Royal Jordanian flies nonstop to Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) from New York JFK, Chicago, Detroit, Washington Dulles and, since May 2026, Dallas Fort Worth, in roughly 11 to 13 hours. Gulf and European carriers add one-stop options from almost every US city. From Queen Alia airport the drive is about an hour, and from central Amman about 45 minutes, winding down through the hills to the valley floor. A private driver is the easiest option; see chauffeur services.
The resorts sit side by side along a short stretch of shore at Sweimeh, each with its own beach access and spa.

Each resort has its own beach with mud and fresh-water showers, and most offer Dead Sea salt scrubs, mud wraps and thalassotherapy pools. Beyond the spa, hike the water trails of the Wadi Mujib nature reserve, where a canyon river runs into the sea, or take an early-morning visit to Bethany Beyond the Jordan, the UNESCO-listed Baptism Site of Jesus, 15 minutes north. The Dead Sea Panorama, on the cliffs above, has a small museum and a superb sunset view. See our pages on health spas and Christian holy sites.
Dining here is almost entirely within the resorts, which offer Levantine grills, Italian and seafood restaurants and sunset terraces. Book a table facing the water for the moment the sun drops behind the hills.
Branded residences and resort villas have appeared along the shore as Jordan expands its tourism zones. For buyers considering the country, our guides to branded residences and Jordan's Vision 2033 are good starting points.
Questions travelers ask
About 15 to 20 minutes at a time is plenty. Avoid splashing and keep the water away from your eyes, and do not shave the day before.
Yes, the resorts sell day passes, but an overnight stay lets you enjoy the spa and the sunset without rushing.
October to May, when it is warm but not hot.
Yes, but it is simple: US passport holders can get a visa on arrival or apply online in advance. The Jordan Pass, bought online before you travel, combines the visa fee with entry to Petra, Wadi Rum and dozens of other sites for visitors staying at least three days (two nights), and is usually the better value.
