Why the region is

Why the region is wonderful for families

Children are adored in Arab culture, and you will feel that welcome everywhere, from hotel staff who remember a child's name to restaurants that happily warm a bottle. The leading resorts treat families as honored guests, with kids' clubs, teen lounges, babysitting, children's menus and interconnecting rooms or villas.

The winter sun is gentle, the Gulf and Red Sea are calm and warm, and distances are short: in the UAE you can combine a beach resort, a desert camp and a world-class theme park in a single week. Our guide to concierge, security and family services covers nannies, private guides and more.

Beyond the theme parks

Some of the best family memories are simpler: a sunset desert camp with camel rides and stargazing, a dhow cruise along Musandam's fjords with dolphins alongside, or snorkeling over coral from the beach in Aqaba or Eilat. In Egypt, older children are spellbound by the pyramids and the treasures of Tutankhamun at the Grand Egyptian Museum; in Jordan, walking through the Siq into Petra is an adventure in itself.

Museums are excellent for children too: the Louvre Abu Dhabi has a dedicated children's museum, and Dubai's Museum of the Future is a favorite with curious minds. Browse our guides to theme parks and entertainment, desert experiences and the region's museums.

Practical tips for traveling

Practical tips for traveling with children

Choose a nonstop flight; the Gulf airlines offer bassinets, children's meals and amenity kits, and our guide to the best airlines compares their cabins. Ask for interconnecting rooms or a villa when you book, and reserve kids' club places for the busiest weeks. Car seats are available from chauffeur firms and rental companies on request.

The sun is strong even in winter: hats, high-factor sunscreen, rash guards and plenty of water are essential. Pharmacies and pediatric care in the Gulf cities are excellent, with many English-speaking doctors; see private healthcare. Pack a light layer for each child, as malls and cars are strongly air-conditioned.

Schools and homes

Living here as a family: schools and homes

Many families who visit go on to relocate. Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh offer outstanding international schools and family communities with gardens and beaches nearby. Read our guides to international schools and Dubai Luxury Real Estate.

Questions families ask

What is the best age for a family trip to the Middle East?

Any age works. Toddlers love the beaches and kids' clubs, school-age children love the theme parks and desert, and teens enjoy the thrill rides, diving and ancient sites.

When is the best time for a family vacation?

From late October to April. Thanksgiving, the winter holidays and spring break are the busiest weeks, so book flights, villas and kids' clubs well in advance.

Are the theme parks open in summer?

Yes. Most of the big parks in Abu Dhabi and Dubai are indoors or air-conditioned, making them a popular summer activity.

Can I hire a babysitter at the hotel?

Leading resorts offer vetted babysitting services, usually booked through the concierge a day or more in advance.
