Why go
Inside the walls of the Jerusalem Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian quarters sit side by side within less than half a square mile. Within a short walk you can stand at the Western Wall, follow the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and look up at the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount, known in Arabic as Haram al-Sharif. Few cities let you feel the depth of three faiths so directly.
Beyond the walls, modern Jerusalem offers the Israel Museum with the Dead Sea Scrolls, the moving Yad Vashem memorial, the lively Mahane Yehuda market and a fine collection of grand hotels. Our page on Jerusalem, holy city of three faiths goes deeper into the sacred sites, and the Israel travel guide covers the rest of the country.

Jerusalem sits about 2,500 feet above sea level, so it is cooler and drier than the coast. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant, with clear skies and comfortable days. Summer days are warm and sunny but evenings are cool, while winter can bring cold rain and, every few years, a dusting of snow. Christmas, Easter and the Jewish High Holidays are moving times to visit but book far ahead. Expect much of West Jerusalem to close from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening; the hotels remain fully open.
Most visitors fly into Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) near Tel Aviv, about 45 minutes away by car or 25 minutes on the high-speed train. Delta flies from New York JFK, United from Newark, and El Al serves several US gateways, with more US routes due back over the winter. A private driver and VIP airport assistance make the transfer seamless; see arriving privately and chauffeur services.
Luxury hotels
Jerusalem's best hotels are built of the city's honey-colored limestone, and many look straight across to the Old City walls. Star ratings shown are the commonly published ratings.

Things to do
Hire a licensed private guide for your first morning in the Old City; the layers of history make far more sense with someone who knows them. Walk the ramparts, visit the Tower of David museum by the Jaffa Gate, explore the Western Wall Tunnels, and see the Garden of Gethsemane and the Mount of Olives at golden hour. Visitors may enter the Temple Mount compound at set hours through a single gate, while the interiors of its mosques are reserved for Muslim worshippers.
Give the Israel Museum a full morning, then wander Mahane Yehuda for tastings at dusk. Ein Karem, a village of churches and galleries on the city's western edge, makes a lovely half day. Read more on our Christian holy sites, Jewish heritage sites and great mosques and Islamic sites pages.
Bethlehem, birthplace of Jesus in the Christian tradition, lies about six miles south in the Palestinian Territories; see Bethlehem and Hebron. The Dead Sea and Masada are about an hour and a half east and south, and Tel Aviv's beaches are an hour west. Across the Jordan River, the Dead Sea resorts of Jordan and the Baptism Site at Bethany Beyond the Jordan complete a pilgrim's journey.
Property
Jerusalem draws second-home buyers from around the world, particularly families who spend the holidays here. Demand centers on limestone apartments in Talbiyeh, Rehavia, the German Colony and the luxury buildings around Mamilla. Overseas buyers typically work with a local lawyer and agent; our prime Luxury Real Estate agencies page is a good place to begin.
Questions travelers ask
Two full days covers the Old City and the Israel Museum; three or four lets you add Bethlehem, the Dead Sea or Masada at an unhurried pace.
Cover shoulders and knees at all churches, synagogues and mosques. Women may be asked to cover their hair at some sites; a light scarf is useful. Men should bring a head covering for the Western Wall, though paper kippot are provided.
Much of West Jerusalem pauses for Shabbat from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening, including most restaurants and public transport. The Old City, its markets and the hotels stay open, and Saturday is a peaceful day for walking.
No visa is required for tourist stays, but US passport holders must obtain an ETA-IL electronic travel authorization online before flying.
