Why go
Al Ain is the birthplace of Sheikh Zayed, founder of the UAE, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the region. Its oases are watered by aflaj, ancient channels that still carry water to the palms. The Cultural Sites of Al Ain are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, covering Bronze Age tombs, early settlements and the oases themselves; see our UNESCO World Heritage guide.
Greener and cooler at night than the coast, with no high-rise skyline, Al Ain feels like the UAE of an earlier era. It pairs well with a stay in Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

Most visitors arrive by chauffeured car from Abu Dhabi or Dubai, along fast, quiet highways lined with planted trees; see chauffeurs and self-drive. The city sits right on the border with Oman's Buraimi, and the mountains of the Hajar range rise to the south and east. Al Ain International Airport handles limited scheduled and private traffic. Winter, November to March, is the best time; summer days are very hot.

Where to dine
International and Lebanese restaurants in a garden setting, the city's most reliable dining.
Small local cafes serve dates, Arabic coffee and traditional breads; ask your hotel for current favorites.
Leave Abu Dhabi or Dubai early to arrive as the oasis opens, when the light through the palms is at its best and the air is cool. Walk the shaded paths and see how the falaj channels share water between plots, a system recognized by UNESCO and still used today. Continue to the Al Ain Palace Museum area and Al Jahili Fort, whose Thesiger exhibition captures desert life in the 1940s; our Bedouin heritage page tells more of that story.
After lunch, visit Hili Archaeological Park, then drive the 12-kilometer road up Jebel Hafeet, one of the UAE's highest peaks, in time for sunset over the plains toward Oman. Hot springs at Green Mubazzarah lie at the mountain's foot. Stay the night, or return to the coast after dinner. Learn more about the country's past on our UAE history and culture page.
And the future
Al Ain is part of Abu Dhabi's long-term plan for culture and tourism, with heritage restoration and visitor facilities expanding; see Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. Most investors focus on the capital itself; see our Abu Dhabi Luxury Real Estate guide.
Questions
