Why go
Amman is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, known to the Romans as Philadelphia. On Jabal al-Qal'a, the Amman Citadel holds the columns of the Temple of Hercules, a Byzantine church and the Umayyad Palace, with sweeping views across the white city. Below, the 6,000-seat Roman Theatre is still used for performances.
Modern Amman is relaxed, safe-feeling and refined, with art galleries in Jabal al-Weibdeh, cafés and boutiques along Rainbow Street, and fine dining in Abdoun and Sweifieh. It is also the gateway to everything else in the country: the Dead Sea is under an hour away, Jerash 45 minutes, and Petra about three hours south. See our Jordan luxury travel guide for the full picture.

Spring and autumn bring warm, sunny days and cool evenings. Summer is hot but dry, and Amman's altitude keeps nights pleasant. Winter can be chilly and wet, with the occasional snowfall on the hills. During Ramadan, restaurants open after sunset for iftar and the city takes on a festive evening atmosphere; dress modestly and avoid eating in public in daylight.
Royal Jordanian flies nonstop to Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) from New York JFK, Chicago, Detroit, Washington Dulles and, since May 2026, Dallas Fort Worth, in roughly 11 to 13 hours. Gulf and European carriers add one-stop options from almost every US city. Queen Alia is about 35 minutes from the city's main hotels. Fast-track and meet-and-assist services are available, and private jets use the airport's dedicated terminal; see arriving privately and private jet charter.

Things to do
Begin at the Citadel in the early morning light, then walk down to the Roman Theatre and the souks of downtown. The Jordan Museum displays fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the 9,000-year-old Ain Ghazal statues, among the oldest human figures ever made. Darat al Funun, an arts center in restored villas, and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts are highlights for art lovers. Car enthusiasts should not miss the Royal Automobile Museum.
In the evening, stroll Rainbow Street, browse the boutiques of the Abdali Boulevard and end with dinner on a terrace overlooking the hills. Explore more in our pages on museums, Jordan's history and culture and Arab hospitality and the majlis.
Jerash, 45 minutes north, is one of the best-preserved Roman cities anywhere, with colonnaded streets and a vast oval plaza. Madaba and Mount Nebo, with their famous mosaics, lie on the way to the Dead Sea resorts. Further south are Petra and the desert of Wadi Rum.
Property and investment
Amman's prime residential districts, Abdoun, Dabouq and Deir Ghbar, offer spacious villas and apartments at prices far below the Gulf capitals. Foreign buyers may purchase property with government approval, and Jordan offers investment-linked residency routes. Our guides to residency and golden visas and Jordan's Vision 2033 explain the wider opportunity.
Questions travelers ask
Yes, but it is simple: US passport holders can get a visa on arrival or apply online in advance. The Jordan Pass, bought online before you travel, combines the visa fee with entry to Petra, Wadi Rum and dozens of other sites for visitors staying at least three days (two nights), and is usually the better value.
Two nights is ideal: one day for the Citadel, downtown and museums, and another for Jerash or Madaba.
Yes. Hotels, many restaurants and licensed shops serve alcohol, and Jordan produces its own wine and beer. It is less available during Ramadan.
Amman is more relaxed than many cities in the region, but modest dress is appreciated: shoulders and knees covered downtown and at religious sites.
