Why go

Ephesus was among the largest cities of the Roman world, a port of marble streets, temples and theaters, and its ruins are some of the best preserved anywhere in the Mediterranean. Walking down its main street toward the facade of the Library of Celsus is one of the most memorable moments in Türkiye, and the site is a pillar of early Christian history as well, described in our guide to Christian holy sites.

İzmir, about an hour north, is Türkiye's third-largest city, a relaxed, liberal port with a seafront promenade, the Kemeraltı bazaar and an excellent food scene. West of the city, the Çeşme peninsula has become the Aegean's most fashionable summer address, centered on the stone lanes and windmills of Alaçatı.

Together they make an ideal week: history and wine country around Ephesus, city life in İzmir and beach days in Çeşme. Extend south to Bodrum for yachts, or fly on to Istanbul or Cappadocia.

What to see and do

Ephesus Archaeological Site

Selçuk, İzmir Province

The Library of Celsus, the Great Theater, the marble Curetes Street and the Terrace Houses, with their mosaics and frescoes, are the highlights. Arrive at opening time to enjoy it before the crowds and the heat.

House of the Virgin Mary

Mount Koressos, near Selçuk

A small stone chapel in the hills above Ephesus, revered as the place where Mary may have spent her last years. It is a place of quiet pilgrimage for Christians and Muslims alike.

Basilica of St John and Selçuk

Selçuk

The ruins of a vast sixth-century basilica crown the hill above the town, near the fourteenth-century İsa Bey Mosque and the Ephesus Museum.

Şirince

Hills above Selçuk

A hillside village of whitewashed houses known for fruit wines, olive oil and village breakfasts. Stroll its lanes in the late afternoon.

Kemeraltı and the Kordon

İzmir

Lose yourself in the historic bazaar, then walk the waterfront Kordon at sunset with a glass of tea, past the city's famous clock tower in Konak Square.

Alaçatı and Çeşme

Çeşme peninsula

Stone houses, boutique hotels and some of the best restaurants on the coast, plus windy bays loved by windsurfers. Çeşme's beaches and marina are a short drive away.

Where to stay

Stay near Ephesus for history, on the Çeşme peninsula for the beach, or in İzmir for the city.

Getting there

From the US, Turkish Airlines flies nonstop from many US cities to Istanbul, with onward flights to İzmir of about an hour. İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport is about an hour from Ephesus and Kuşadası and about 50 minutes from Çeşme. See nonstop flights from the US.

Kuşadası is one of the busiest cruise ports in Türkiye, and many Mediterranean cruises stop here for a day at Ephesus. For visa rules, US passport holders can currently visit Türkiye for short tourist stays without a visa; check our visas and entry guide and confirm before you travel.

Best months to visit

April to June and September to October are perfect for sightseeing, with warm days and a swimmable sea from late May. July and August are hot at Ephesus but glorious on the breezy Çeşme coast. See when to go.

Questions travelers ask

How much time do I need at Ephesus?

Allow three to four hours for the main site and the Terrace Houses, plus time for the House of the Virgin Mary and Selçuk.

Should I stay in Kuşadası, Selçuk or İzmir?

Selçuk and Şirince are closest and most atmospheric, Kuşadası offers resorts by the sea, and İzmir suits travelers who want a city base with good flights.

Can I visit Ephesus from a cruise ship?

Yes. Kuşadası port is about 20 minutes away, and private guides and shore excursions meet ships there. See cruise ports and terminals.

Is Alaçatı worth visiting?

Very much so, especially in early summer and September, when the village is lively but not crowded.
