Why visit Madinah

Madinah is where the Prophet Muhammad settled after the Hijra and where he is buried. Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet's Mosque, with its green dome, vast marble courtyards and giant shade umbrellas that open with the sun, is the second holiest site in Islam. Most pilgrims spend several days here before or after Umrah in Makkah, and many find its atmosphere especially peaceful.

The Rawdah, the area between the Prophet's pulpit and his chamber, is visited by appointment: permits and time slots are booked through Nusuk, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's official app. Quba Mosque, the first mosque built in Islam, is a short drive south, and Mount Uhud recalls a defining moment in early Islamic history. Our luxury Umrah and Hajj guide covers private guides and packages.

Visiting as a non-Muslim

Unlike Makkah, the city of Madinah is open to all visitors, and non-Muslim travelers may visit the city. The sacred central area around the Prophet's Mosque is reserved for Muslims, so non-Muslim visitors should keep to the wider city and its museums and markets. Rules and signage are updated from time to time, so check the latest guidance with your hotel or the official Visit Saudi channels before you go, and dress conservatively throughout.

Etiquette and tips

Dress modestly; women cover their hair inside the mosque. Separate prayer areas and entrances serve men and women, and gate numbers make it easy to meet up again. Keep voices low, remove shoes at the entrance (bags for them are provided) and allow extra time on Fridays. The mosque is busiest in Ramadan and around the Hajj season; November to February is the most comfortable time weather-wise.

Beyond the mosque, visit the date farms on the city's edge, where Ajwa dates are grown; see coffee and dates. The Dar Al Madinah museum and the exhibitions around the central area explain the city's history.

Choosing a hotel

Distance to the mosque matters most: the hotels in the central area put you within a few minutes of the gates, which makes it possible to return for each of the five prayers and to rest in between. Ask for a room facing the mosque if you would like to see the domes and minarets, and for connecting rooms if you travel as a family. Hotels close to the women's gates are helpful for mixed families. Rates rise in Ramadan; a five-star room near the mosque costs from about US$250 to more than US$1,000 a night in peak periods (approximately).

Getting there

Madinah's airport receives domestic and regional flights; from the US, fly to Jeddah or Riyadh and connect. The Haramain high-speed train links Madinah with Makkah in about two hours, stopping at Jeddah and Jeddah airport. See trains and our Jeddah guide for the onward journey. US passport holders can visit on a Saudi tourist eVisa.
