Makkah Hotels Near the Haram for Umrah and Hajj

For Muslim pilgrims, choosing Makkah hotels near the Haram shapes the whole Umrah: a five-star room steps from the Grand Mosque means more prayers inside, less walking in the heat and quiet rest between rites. Only Muslims may enter Makkah.

Planning a luxury Umrah

Umrah can be performed at any time of year except during the days of Hajj. Visitors from the United States can travel on a Saudi tourist eVisa, which allows Umrah outside the Hajj season, or on an Umrah visa arranged through an approved provider. Within Saudi Arabia, permits and time slots are managed through Nusuk, the official platform of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, which also books visits to the Rawdah in Madinah. Hajj requires a Hajj permit and visa issued through Nusuk; American pilgrims book through authorized providers listed there.

Our luxury Umrah and Hajj guide covers premium packages, private guides who explain each rite, and VIP transfers. For the spiritual and historical background, see Faith and Heritage and great mosques and Islamic sites.

Etiquette and practical tips

Enter the state of ihram at the appropriate miqat before reaching Makkah; when flying to Jeddah, many pilgrims change at home or on the plane. Dress simply and modestly, keep your Nusuk permit on your phone, and carry little. The Grand Mosque is busiest after the Isha prayer and on Thursday and Friday nights, so many pilgrims perform tawaf in the early hours. Drink zamzam water often, wear comfortable sandals and use the wheelchair and golf-cart services if needed.

Ramadan, especially the last ten nights, is the most crowded and most sought-after time; book many months ahead. Quieter periods are the weeks after Hajj and the cooler months from November to February.

Getting there

Most American pilgrims fly to Jeddah: Saudia flies nonstop from New York JFK and Washington Dulles, and the Gulf carriers connect via Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi. From Jeddah, a private car takes about 75 minutes, or the Haramain high-speed train reaches Makkah in about 45 minutes. The same line links Makkah and Madinah in about two hours. See Madinah hotels and the Prophet's Mosque and our Jeddah guide for the rest of the journey, and trains for rail details.

Choosing the right room

Rooms are sold by view: full Kaaba view, partial Haram view, or city view. A full Kaaba view lets family members who cannot walk far follow the prayers from the room, which many pilgrims value greatly. Suites on high floors in the Abraj Al Bait towers combine views with private lounges and in-room dining, a real comfort during Ramadan when iftar and suhoor fall at set hours. Ask whether the hotel offers direct access to the Haram plaza, priority elevators at prayer times and connecting rooms for families. Prices rise steeply in Ramadan and peak Umrah months; a Haram-view suite can run from about US$1,000 to well over US$5,000 a night (approximately), and booking several months ahead is wise.
