Why go

Why go to Saadiyat Island

Saadiyat, meaning 'island of happiness', sits just off the city of Abu Dhabi, linked by bridge. Its northern shore is a long, soft, protected beach where hawksbill turtles nest and dolphins pass offshore, backed by low-rise resorts rather than towers. Behind the dunes lies the Saadiyat Cultural District, home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena and the newly opened Zayed National Museum, with the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi to come.

That pairing of beach and culture is rare anywhere in the world. Mornings can be spent with Monet and ancient Bactrian gold, afternoons on a sunbed, evenings at a beach grill. Saadiyat is also one of the capital's most sought-after residential islands, covered below.

Best time to visit

Best time to visit and how to arrive

October through April brings warm seas and comfortable air. Summer is hot, though resort pools and the air-conditioned museums keep the island lively. Etihad flies nonstop to Abu Dhabi from six US cities, and the drive from Zayed International takes about 25 minutes; from Dubai, allow about 75 to 90 minutes. Private aircraft use Abu Dhabi's executive terminals; see arriving privately. Yachts can berth at Saadiyat's marinas; see marinas of the Middle East.

A perfect Saadiyat day

Start early at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, when the galleries are quiet and the light under the dome is soft, then continue to the Zayed National Museum next door. Lunch on the terrace at Mamsha, and by mid-afternoon you can be back on the beach, where the water is shallow, clear and calm for much of the year. Book a spa ritual before dinner, or take a guided kayak or paddleboard trip through the mangroves at nearby Jubail Island.

For evenings, many guests head into the city for a sunset visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, about 30 minutes away, or across to Yas Island for a concert at Etihad Arena. Couples looking for complete seclusion can transfer by boat to Zaya Nurai Island for a night or two.

Nearby

Saadiyat is a natural base for exploring the capital. The Corniche and Emirates Palace are 15 minutes away, the desert palace of Qasr Al Sarab in the Empty Quarter is a scenic two-hour drive, and Dubai is reachable for a day of shopping or dining. Families often split a stay between Saadiyat's beaches and Yas's theme parks.
