Why go

Why go to Siwa

Siwa feels like another world. Its people speak their own Amazigh language, Siwi, and its villages are built around an old mud-brick fortress town. Olive and date groves stretch between deep blue salt lakes, freshwater springs bubble up in the palms, and the dunes of the Great Sand Sea roll away to the horizon.

History adds its own spell: Alexander the Great traveled here to consult the Oracle of Amun. Siwa is best combined with the Mediterranean coast at El Alamein and Alexandria. For the country overview, see our Egypt luxury vacation guide.

Siwa's eco-lodges

Where to stay: Siwa's eco-lodges

Siwa has no large luxury hotels. Its finest stays are handcrafted eco-lodges built of salt-rock and mud, where the luxury is silence, space and beauty. Star ratings do not apply.

Luxury eco-lodge

Adrère Amellal

Below the White Mountain, by Lake Siwa

One of the world's most celebrated desert retreats, built in traditional kershef and lit only by candles and moonlight, with no electricity in the rooms. Organic meals come from the lodge's own gardens, and the pool is fed by a natural spring.

Boutique

Albabenshal

Shali, the old town

A small lodge set into the edge of the old fortress town, from the same family behind Adrère Amellal, with terraces looking over the palms.

Eco-lodge

Taziry Ecolodge

Gaary, near the salt lakes

A peaceful, artistic retreat of mud-brick rooms facing the mountains and lakes, with a spring-fed pool and home-style Siwan cooking.

Siwa Shali Resort

★★★★ Edge of the oasis

A larger resort in Siwan style with gardens, pools and modern comforts, for travelers who prefer electricity and conventional facilities.

Things to do

Things to do in Siwa

Shali Fortress

Climb through the restored mud-brick lanes of the old town at sunset for views over the oasis.

Temple of the Oracle of Amun

The hilltop temple where Alexander the Great sought the oracle's blessing.

Mountain of the Dead

A hill honeycombed with painted ancient tombs just outside town.

Cleopatra's Spring

A stone-lined natural pool, a lovely spot for a morning swim.

Salt lakes

Float effortlessly in the brilliant turquoise salt pools, then rinse off in a freshwater spring.

Great Sand Sea

A 4x4 safari into the dunes for sandboarding, hot springs and a sunset picnic, with a night of stargazing.

Where to dine

Meals are mostly taken at your lodge, built around local olives, dates, fresh bread and slow-cooked dishes. In town, simple cafés around the main square serve Siwan specialties and mint tea. A dinner under the stars in the dunes, arranged through your lodge, is a highlight.

Getting there, including private

Siwa is remote, which is part of its charm. From the US, fly nonstop to Cairo with EgyptAir, then either drive about eight to nine hours or fly to El Alamein and continue about six to seven hours by road via Marsa Matrouh. Siwa has a small airfield that has been used for occasional and charter flights; ask a specialist about current private options. See private jet charter and desert camps and lodges for comparable stays across the region.

Good to know for US travelers

Americans can buy an e-visa online or a visa on arrival (each about $30), each for up to 30 days, with a passport valid for at least six months. Siwa is traditional and conservative: dress modestly, ask before photographing people, and expect alcohol to be unavailable. Days are pleasant in winter but nights can be cold, so pack layers. Cash is essential; ATMs are few.

A slower kind of luxury

Siwa is a place to visit rather than to invest, and its protected landscape is part of its value. Travelers drawn to Egypt's property market usually look at the coast instead; see our Egypt Luxury Real Estate guide.

Questions travelers ask

Questions travelers ask about Siwa

How long should I stay in Siwa?

Three to four nights allows time for the oasis, the salt lakes and a desert safari, given the long journey.

Is there electricity at Adrère Amellal?

No, the rooms are lit by candles and lanterns. That is a large part of its appeal.

When is the best time to visit?

October to April, when days are warm and nights cool. Summer is very hot.

Can I combine Siwa with the coast?

Yes, it pairs naturally with a few days at El Alamein or Alexandria.
