To study in the Middle East is to earn a world-class degree while living at the crossroads of three continents. Here is how American students find the right campus, the right scholarship and the right visa.

At a glance
A generation ago, studying in the Middle East usually meant a summer of Arabic. Today it can mean a full American degree in Abu Dhabi, a fully funded doctorate on the Red Sea, or a semester in Doha's Education City alongside students from more than a hundred countries. Our overview of the region's universities and research introduces the leading institutions.
The appeal is practical as well as adventurous. Classes at the featured campuses are taught largely in English, the region's economies are hiring in technology, energy, finance and tourism, and graduates leave with a network that spans the Gulf, Asia and Europe. Campuses are modern, safe and well connected, with nonstop flights from the US to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Riyadh.

| Path | Where | Length | Typical cost to you (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| American degree abroad | NYU Abu Dhabi; Education City, Doha | 4 years | Need-based aid can cover much of the cost |
| Fully funded master's or PhD | KAUST (Thuwal); MBZUAI (Abu Dhabi) | 1.5 to 5 years | Tuition covered, plus stipend and housing |
| Study-abroad semester | AUC, AUB, AUS, NYU Abu Dhabi and others | 1 semester or year | Often home-university tuition |
| Summer Arabic | Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Egypt | 6 to 10 weeks | Free with a scholarship such as CLS |
| Graduate research year | Fulbright and Boren awards | 9 to 12 months | Funded by the award |
These campuses award the same degrees as their home universities.
