A region that invests in ideas

For centuries the Middle East was where scholars came to learn: the libraries of Baghdad and Cairo carried mathematics, astronomy and medicine forward during the Golden Age of Science. Today that tradition is back, rebuilt on modern campuses with research budgets, laboratories and faculty recruited from the world's top universities.

The national plans behind this push, from Saudi Vision 2030 to Qatar National Vision 2030, treat universities as engines of the knowledge economy. The result is a fast-growing network of institutions working on artificial intelligence, clean energy, desalination, coral reef science, genomics and space, many of them closely tied to the region's AI and technology hubs.

For American readers the welcome surprise is how familiar much of it feels. Teaching is often in English, several leading American universities run full degree campuses in Abu Dhabi and Doha, and the American University of Beirut and the American University in Cairo have educated generations of regional leaders. If you are thinking of enrolling, our guide to studying in the Middle East covers visas, scholarships and semesters abroad.
