Why go to Dahab

Dahab is the Red Sea at its most easygoing. Once a Bedouin fishing settlement, it is now a low-rise town of cafes, dive centers and cushioned beach terraces strung along a bay where the reef drops away almost from the shoreline. Unlike the big resort strips, most of Dahab's diving is done from shore: you walk in, fins in hand, and the coral begins.

The town divides neatly into three moods. The seafront promenade around Masbat and Mashraba is for strolling, dining and watching the mountains of Saudi Arabia turn pink across the water at dusk. The Lagoon, to the south, is a shallow, wind-blessed bay that has made Dahab one of the world's favorite places to learn kitesurfing and windsurfing. And north of town, reefs such as the Blue Hole and the Canyon are set against bare desert mountains.

Dahab is about 55 miles from Sharm El Sheikh, so many travelers combine the two: a luxury resort in Sharm and a few days of Dahab's barefoot charm.

What to see and do

The Blue Hole

North of Dahab

A deep, near-circular sinkhole in the reef, ringed by coral and visible as a disc of dark blue from the shore. Snorkelers float over its rim, where the coral wall is at its most colorful; divers explore the reef walls with certified local guides.

Lighthouse Reef

Dahab seafront

The town's house reef, right off the promenade and ideal for first dives, courses and night dives. Cafes on the shore make it as social as it is easy.

The Lagoon

South Dahab

Flat, shallow water and reliable wind make this a superb place to learn kitesurfing or windsurfing. Several schools offer lessons with qualified instructors. See surfing and watersports.

Mount Sinai sunrise

St Catherine, South Sinai

A night drive and a guided climb of about three hours bring you to the summit, at about 7,500 feet, in time for sunrise over the granite peaks. It is one of the great experiences of the region.

St Catherine's Monastery

St Catherine, South Sinai

Among the oldest working Christian monasteries in the world, at the foot of Mount Sinai and part of a UNESCO World Heritage area. Visiting hours are limited, so plan with your guide. More in Christian holy sites.

Bedouin camps and Ras Abu Galum

North of Dahab

A protected coast reached by boat, camel or on foot, with simple Bedouin camps serving grilled fish and tea. Snorkeling here is quiet and pristine.

Where to stay

Dahab favors small hotels and dive lodges; for full five-star service, stay in Sharm El Sheikh and visit for the day.

Retac Qunay Dahab Resort & Spa

★★★★★ Dahab, Egypt

Dahab's leading five-star, formerly Le Méridien Dahab, terraced down a hillside to its own bay and reef, with large pools and sea-view rooms. A polished base that still feels part of the town.

Stay in Sharm El Sheikh

Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

For the region's finest resorts, base yourself in Sharm El Sheikh, about an hour away, and visit Dahab and the Blue Hole on a private day trip.

Getting there

From the US, fly to Cairo, where EgyptAir operates nonstop service from New York, then connect to Sharm El Sheikh, a flight of about an hour. Sharm also has direct flights from much of Europe. The drive from Sharm airport to Dahab takes about an hour on a good desert road; hotels arrange transfers. See nonstop flights from the US.

US passport holders can buy a visa on arrival at Sharm El Sheikh airport (about US$30 for a single entry) or apply ahead on Egypt's official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg. Travelers staying only in the South Sinai resorts may be eligible for a free Sinai-only entry stamp; it does not allow travel to the rest of Egypt, so most visitors buy the full visa. Rules change, so confirm before you go.

Best months to visit

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring warm water and pleasant days. Winter is mild and the clearest season for the Mount Sinai sunrise, though the summit is cold before dawn. Summer is hot but the sea breeze is constant, which kitesurfers love. Compare seasons in when to go.

Questions travelers ask

Can I snorkel the Blue Hole without diving?

Yes. The reef rim is shallow and the coral is at its best near the surface. Go with a local guide, who will show you the easy entry points.

Is Dahab good for beginners?

It is one of the best places in the world to learn to dive or kitesurf, thanks to shore entries, calm reefs and the shallow Lagoon. Explore more in diving and the outdoors.

How do I visit Mount Sinai from Dahab?

Book a guided night trip: pickup is around midnight, the climb starts in the early hours and you reach the top for sunrise, with St Catherine's Monastery afterward when it is open.

Dahab or Hurghada?

Dahab is small, bohemian and focused on the sea; Hurghada offers large resorts and easy access to Luxor.
