Diriyah Travel: At-Turaif, Bujairi Terrace and Luxury Hotels

Diriyah travel begins at At-Turaif, the mud-brick citadel where the first Saudi state was born, and today this UNESCO site on Riyadh's edge is also the kingdom's most elegant evening out, with luxury hotels opening around its restored lanes and palm groves.

Why go

Why go to Diriyah

In the eighteenth century Diriyah was the capital of the first Saudi state, a walled settlement of Najdi palaces above the fertile bend of Wadi Hanifah. Its At-Turaif quarter, built of sun-dried mud brick with crenellated towers and triangular windows, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 and has been carefully restored. Walking its lanes at dusk, when the walls glow amber under soft lighting, is one of the finest experiences in the Middle East.

Around the old city, the Diriyah project is building a new district of museums, hotels, residences and dining, all in a contemporary Najdi style. Much of it is still under construction, but the heart is open now: At-Turaif itself, the Bujairi Terrace dining quarter and the first hotel, Bab Samhan.

Diriyah is part of Riyadh in practice, so pair it with our Riyadh guide and the wider Saudi Arabia travel guide.

Stay in Riyadh

Central Riyadh

With so few rooms in Diriyah today, many visitors base themselves at a five-star hotel in Riyadh, such as Four Seasons at Kingdom Centre or The Ritz-Carlton, and drive out for the evening.

Planning your visit

At-Turaif opens daily from late morning to around midnight, with later afternoon openings on Fridays; check current hours on the official site, as they can change during events and Ramadan. Tickets and access passes for At-Turaif and Bujairi Terrace are sold through Diriyah's official channels. There is valet parking at Bujairi and paid parking at Samhan. Modest dress is expected, as everywhere in Saudi Arabia, and comfortable shoes help on the earthen lanes.

The best season is November to March. Visit late afternoon, watch the light fade over the walls, then dine on the terrace. Private guides can be arranged through your hotel or our concierge and family travel partners.
