A luxury wedding in Dubai or anywhere in the Middle East promises palace ballrooms, desert ceremonies under the stars and beaches that are reliably sunny all winter. Why marry here

Celebrations are central to life in the Middle East, and the region's hotels have perfected the art of the great wedding. Ballrooms seat a thousand, but intimate options abound too: a clifftop ceremony in Oman, a riad garden in Marrakech, a dinner for forty in the desert. Winter weather is close to guaranteed, and guests can fly nonstop from most of the world.

Many couples plan a week rather than a day, with welcome dinners, desert excursions and a beach farewell. Our guides to the finest resorts, private villas and private chefs and catering help you build it.

Civil marriage Abu Dhabi

Civil marriage Abu Dhabi and the rules for foreign couples

Abu Dhabi introduced civil marriage for non-Muslim couples, and its civil family court accepts applications from residents and visitors alike, making it the simplest place in the Gulf for foreign couples to marry legally. Documents usually include passports, proof of single status and an application through the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. Requirements can change, so confirm with the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department before you plan.

Elsewhere, many couples hold the legal ceremony at home or in Abu Dhabi and celebrate with a symbolic ceremony at their chosen venue. Cyprus is also a long-established destination for civil weddings; see our Limassol guide. Public displays of affection should be modest in most Gulf countries, and alcohol is served only at licensed venues.

Planners and practicalities

An experienced local planner is essential for permits, suppliers and guest logistics. Most five-star hotels have dedicated wedding teams; independent planners in Dubai and Marrakech handle multi-day celebrations. For large guest lists, block rooms a year ahead and consider private jet charter for the wedding party.

Many couples who marry here come back to settle. Our Dubai Luxury Real Estate guide and the page on residency and golden visas explain how.
