Why go to Umm Al Quwain

Umm Al Quwain sits between Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, on a sandy peninsula that wraps around a wide, shallow lagoon. The water is fringed with mangroves and dotted with low islands, the largest of which, Siniya, shelters one of the world's largest colonies of Socotra cormorants. It feels a world away from the towers of Dubai, yet it is under an hour's drive.

This quiet coast also holds some of the deepest history in the Emirates. Archaeologists have uncovered a first-century temple at Ed-Dur and, on Siniya Island, what is believed to be the oldest known pearling town in the Gulf. Combine a visit with the beach hotels of Ajman and the resorts of Ras Al Khaimah for a slower-paced week on the northern coast.

Things to do in Umm Al Quwain

Kayak the Khor Al Beida mangroves

Umm Al Quwain lagoon

Paddle through tidal channels lined with mangroves, watching herons, flamingos and crabs at close quarters. Early morning and late afternoon bring the softest light and the most birdlife; it is one of the best wildlife and nature outings in the northern emirates.

Umm Al Quwain National Museum

Old Town, Umm Al Quwain

The 18th-century fort, long the seat of the ruling family, now holds displays of weapons, coins, jewelry and finds from Ed-Dur. Its watchtower and courtyard are a fine example of coastal Emirati architecture.

Ed-Dur archaeological site

Near Umm Al Quwain

Among the largest archaeological sites in the UAE, Ed-Dur was a trading town about two thousand years ago. Its rectangular first-century temple helped place the site on UNESCO's Tentative List in 2012; see our UNESCO World Heritage guide.

Siniya Island

Umm Al Quwain lagoon

Excavations here have revealed a late antique to early Islamic pearling town of the 6th and 7th centuries and a monastery, with loose pearls, diving weights and pottery from as far as India. The island is also an important bird habitat.

Old Town and the harbor

Umm Al Quwain

Stroll past restored coral-stone houses, the fish market and the dhow harbor, where boats still unload the morning's catch. Seafood restaurants nearby serve it simply grilled.

Watersports and the beach

Umm Al Quwain coast

The lagoon's calm, shallow water suits paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing, while the long beach toward Al Hamra is ideal for quiet walks.

Where to stay

Umm Al Quwain has no five-star hotel yet, so most visitors stay in Ajman, about 30 minutes away, and come for the day. Local beach resorts suit a simple lagoon stay.

Getting there

Fly nonstop from the US to Dubai (DXB) on Emirates or to Abu Dhabi (AUH) on Etihad; our page on nonstop flights from the US lists the routes. From Dubai International, Umm Al Quwain is about 45 to 60 minutes by car along the coastal highway; Sharjah International Airport is closer. A rental car or private driver is the easiest way to explore, since sights are spread out around the lagoon.

US citizens receive a free visa on arrival in the UAE. See our UAE visa guide for current details.

Best time to visit

November to March is ideal, with warm days, cool evenings and the best conditions for kayaking and birdwatching. Summer is very hot and humid; if you come then, paddle at sunrise and keep the afternoons for the pool.
